What criteria should I consider when nominating a Guardian for my children?

"We can't tell you exactly who to choose as a Guardian for your children, but we can provide more information to help you make your decision. What is a Guardian? A Guardian has responsibility for the physical custody and care of a minor child and/or the management of the financial affairs of a minor child. While Guardians typically must be appointed or confirmed by a court, nominating a Guardian lets the court consider your preferences in determining who to appoint as Guardian. Things to consider when choosing a Guardian for my children: Given the importance of the role, we recommend selecting someone you trust, and is capable of handling the responsibilities and raising your child in a way that you would approve. While family members may be a good option for some, others may prefer close friends over relatives. While there are no hard rules to selecting a Guardian, here are some points you may wish to consider: The financial stability of the potential Guardian Whether the potential Guardian carry out your own preferences when raising your children How well the potential Guardian and your children know each other What type of relationship exists between your minor children and the potential Guardian Where the potential Guardian lives The age of the potential Guardian, the age of your minor children, and how this age difference may impact your minor children or the potential Guardian Whether the potential Guardian has any other children of their own Don't put off choosing a Guardian Putting off this decision means you have no nomination in place should an unexpected accident occur. If no Guardian is appointed, the court will be left to make the decision for you without your input. Rank your top choices Choose somebody for now as the primary, and add your two backups Change or swap somebody out at any time in the future"
